Exposure, by Kim Askew and Amy Helms, Merit Press, 2013

High school heartthrob, Craig McKenzie is at the top of his game: star of East Anchorage High hockey team and currently dating Beth, the most popular girl on campus. With prom still months away, three Native Alaskan girls deliver an ominous prediction wrapped in traditional folklore. Craig will very soon be king--prom king, that is.

If this plot sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Those familiar with the original will recognize the similarities: Craig’s pride, ambition and self-doubt, the three “witches” who predict his rise and fall, the death of hockey teammate Duncan, the red spot that won’t come out of Beth’s

cheerleader jacket and Beth’s eventual descent into madness. However, the story takes on its own original spin with narrator Skye, who pines for Craig and tries to help him once she suspects his involvement in Duncan’s death.

Exposure is smartly written and unique while still paying homage to the 1606 version. Exciting and engaging enough for today’s modern teen or adult, it may just be a jumping-off point for some to delve further into the bard's original works.
